![]() ![]() How is this context any different than the one in Manhunt 2? In what context does killing orcs become OK? After orcs, it's evil emperors? Or better yet, you play a darkside character and now you're off killing peasants. From my experience with Manhunt 1, I'm inclined to trust and agree with them.Īs I mentioned, we're not attacking you but this "context" you speak of is a bit silly, is it not? Clearly the BBFC decided that Manhunt 2 has no artistic merit. Perhaps you can get technical and say that they ARE government because they have power, but my original point, and one I THOUGHT was quite obvious, was that the BBFC is not under the control of the British government, as currently represented by the Labour Party under Tony Blair/Gordon Brown.īecause as I stated the severity of the violence is not the only factor in deciding a rating. There are lots of organisations in this country with specific rights to do specific things which aren't organisations of the government. The Competition Commission isn't part of the government and yet it has the sole right to judge matters in its field. The Bank of England isn't part of the government, and yet it has the sole right to set interest rates. I can't decide if you really can't see the difference between government and non-governmental public services. The BBC can ban content? What exactly does the BBC decide that the laws then enforce? I can't decide if you're joking or not. Because that is an extremely slippery slope.īy the same token that the BBC is a publicly owned organisation, but not a government body? But otherwise, like I said before, society should not bend for the deviant. There are a very few specific exceptions for things like, yes, child porn and hate crimes. This is the line for books, for movies, for everything in art and culture. Normal, mentally healthy adults know the difference between fantasy and reality. Would it surprise you to hear that, yes, in fact I would protest such a thing? Even though I would find it extremely disturbing and would never go near it, myself? Would you protest the banning of a game that depicted graphic child sex abuse? There are things even adults aren't allowed to see or partake in, and to attack the premise of censorship you'd have to attack the laws against a hell of a lot of nasty things we have here. With password lockouts and everything.īecause it stops fucked up things getting to fucked up people?Ĭensorship has it's place in society, and I'm sure the British public would agree. No matter what you think of this - and I think its bullshit, personally society should never bend over for the deviants, as the expression goes - does the Wii not have parental controls built into the thing? Rockstar does have an opportunity to contest the ruling and the only other game the BBFC has banned, Carmeggedon, was overturned during this appeals process. That work was classified ‘18’ in 2003, before the BBFC’s recent games research had been undertaken, but was already at the very top end of what the Board judged to be acceptable at that category.Īgainst this background, the Board’s carefully considered view is that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2, on either platform, would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.Īlthough the difference should not be exaggerated the fact of the game’s unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game. Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been possible. Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board’s published Guidelines. Rejecting a work is a very serious action and one which we do not take lightly.
